LESSON PLAN
FOR INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS PERIOD 1
Grade Level: 9th – 12th
School: Roosevelt
High School, Sioux Falls School District
Date: 11/13/12
Time: 8:10 am –
9:00 am
Reflection
from prior lesson: We just finished
the Microsoft Excel Unit, and we are starting PowerPoint on Tuesday, November
13th. On Friday, the students
had classroom time to make up missing work, re-do work that they want a better
grade on, or work on extra credit. Most
every student took advantage of the available time and made up missing work or
improved previous grades. We wanted to
start the new unit on the first day of the week (which is Tuesday), because we
had Monday off for Veteran’s Day.
Lesson
Goal(s) / Standards:
CA4.1 Create a presentation using
presentation software.
CA4.2 Modify a presentation.
CA4.3 Format the slides in a
presentation.
From Sioux Falls School
District Computer Science Curriculum
Lesson
Objectives:
Students will view a presentation, enter text on a
slide, format text, add a text box, create SmartArt, add a header and footer,
and print handouts. This will be
accomplished as a whole class, and with 100% accuracy, after appropriate
assisting and guiding.
Materials
Needed:
Each student will need their individual desktop PCs,
and Microsoft PowerPoint to complete these objectives. Students also have their own Microsoft
textbook, although on the first day of a new lesson it is usually not referred
to as much.
Contextual
Factors/ Learner Characteristics:
The classroom is made up of 13 students. 7 are female, and 6 are male. 8 students are white (non-Hispanic), 3
students are Hispanic/Latino, 1 student is Asian, and 1 student is Black or
African American. There are multiple
students on IEPs, and there are also a number of students with behavioral
issues and flags that were listed on Infinite Campus parent/teacher
portal. Only 2 of the total 13 students
did not have any behavior issues that were named. Most of the time, when students are working
on classwork, there are a substantial amount of students that will listen to
headphones. Some of the students are
very slow to understand content, or have trouble absorbing information. The main problem in this classroom is the
lack of attendance. When students are
here, they have the opportunity to earn good grades. When students are absent, it is hard for them
to catch up and get missing work done.
A. The Lesson
1.
Introduction (6 minutes)
a. I will get the students’ attention by explaining that
the Microsoft Excel Unit is complete and that we will be starting Microsoft
PowerPoint today, which will help them in the future for school or business
presentations.
b. I will introduce the lesson by putting the video on
broadcast (with SmartSync technology), so that every
student may watch the video on his or her own screens, allowing for a better
opportunity to understand the narrator.
c.
The video is a
nice introduction to PowerPoint and is approximately 5 minutes long.
2.
Content Delivery (approximately 30-40 minutes)
a. After the video, I will take the students step by step
on how to enter text on a slide, format text, add a text box, create SmartArt,
add a header and footer, and how to print handouts by using PowerPoint.
b. These steps will be thoroughly explained and described
in detail, and also be repeated frequently.
c.
My cooperating
teacher and I will make sure students are staying on-task and are getting the
above steps done without falling behind or making errors.
3.
Closure (3-4 minutes)
a. After the objectives are meant, I will look at each
student’s screens and make sure that their PowerPoint presentation looks like
the one I have created.
b. I will answer any questions that students may have.
c.
I will close
class with explaining that the students did well, and that it is very important
to know and understand how to use Microsoft PowerPoint.
B. Assessments Used
Students will
view a presentation, enter text on a slide, format text, add a text box, create
SmartArt, add a header and footer, and print handouts. This will be accomplished as a whole class,
and with 100% accuracy, after appropriate assisting and guiding.
C. Differentiated Instruction
Students will
be able to watch a video, and see exactly what the narrator is doing and
applying to the PowerPoint. The narrator
visually explains the process, while also verbally explaining the same
process. While I am teaching, the
students will produce the same results on their own, while I guide them
visually and verbally. This will be
hands-on, and they also have the opportunity to ask questions, as I will
explain in detail, and repeat steps frequently.
D. Resources
Textbook: Illustrated
Series Microsoft Office 2010 Fundamentals
E. Reflection from Lesson
Students
did a great job on this chapter of Microsoft PowerPoint. We had a lot of information to get across,
and it became challenging to explain everything as thoroughly as it needed to
be. I need to always remember to explain
into detail why we do things we do. For
example, I explained how to put in a shape to a slide – but I did not explain
why you might need a shape on a slide.
Tomorrow, I am guessing some students will need more guidance when
working on the PowerPoint assignment.
Next time, I will break this section up into two days so that one day
doesn’t have so many steps and procedures – and students can have more time to
absorb the new information.
